The Speech and Theatre Association of New Jersey (STANJ) has been the voice of advocacy for the inclusion of speech and theatre arts in educational curricula since 1960. We’ve implemented state and national advocacy strategies and helped to recognize, develop, and promote the importance of teacher certification in speech and theatre. We empower theatre educators through professional development and foster student opportunities with our Governor’s Awards competition and scholarships. We inspire growth, creativity, and excellence in both teachers and students, ensuring a vibrant future for the performing arts.
As an NJEA affiliate, the association includes volunteer members from K-12, college, and professional theatre who are passionate about theatre education. We welcome input from members to help foster growth and change. Members attend monthly PD workshops and presentations at the NJEA Convention. Their students may participate in the Governor’s Awards Theatre competition in the areas of Monologues(*), Scenes(*), Improvisation(*), Musical Theatre, Stage Management, Extraordinary Theatre Performances(*), Character Analysis, Pantomime, Shakespeare, Communication Media Arts, Best Play & Musical. First-place winners in (*) categories are recipients of the Governor's Award in Arts Education. Two college theater scholarships are also offered.
The Speech & Theatre Association of New Jersey, STANJ, is committed to fostering an inclusive and equitable environment for all students and educators involved in the performing arts. We recognize that diversity in our communities enriches our collective experiences and enhances the quality of artistic expression.
We believe that every voice deserves to be heard and every story has the right to be told. To this end, we actively promote access to opportunities for participation, education, and leadership in theatre arts education and performance for individuals of all backgrounds, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, ability, socioeconomic status, or any other characteristic.
Our commitment to equity extends to our programming, outreach, and partnerships. We strive to create spaces that celebrate diverse perspectives and challenge systemic barriers within the arts. We encourage our members, educators, and students to engage in ongoing dialogue about inclusivity and representation in all forms of expression.
As we work towards these goals, we pledge to continuously evaluate our practices, seek feedback from our community, and implement strategies that advance equity within our association and the broader performing arts landscape across New Jersey. Together, we will cultivate a vibrant theatre arts education community that is reflective of the people in every region of our great state and beyond.
